We're Losing a Generation

According to Barna Research, 64% of young adults who grew up in church stop attending by their late twenties. Lifeway found similar numbers: 66% of those who attended regularly as teens stop attending for at least a year.

But here's what's underneath those numbers: Pew Research found that while about 73% of those raised Christian still identify as Christian, roughly one in four have left the faith entirely. And for every person who converts to Christianity, six others walk away.

The church has spent decades asking why they leave. But maybe the better question is: why would they stay?

Recent research points to a clear answer: 84% of adults who had positive childhood experiences with faith remain in that faith. But among those who had negative experiences? Nearly 70% now have no religion at all. They didn't lose something they treasured. Many never experienced faith as something worth keeping.

"Most nonreligious children are born into religious households and lose their faith while under the supervision of parents who believe they are successfully transmitting their religious values." Lifeway Research

We drop kids into Sunday School and teach them Bible stories as if belief is inherited. As if being in the room makes them Christians. We answer questions they haven't asked yet, and we skip the questions they will ask.

But kids become teenagers. Teenagers become adults. And somewhere along the way, they're going to sit in a dorm room or a break room or a quiet moment and think: Do I actually believe this? Why?

The data is clear: when the childhood experience of faith is shallow, scripted, or negative, the faith doesn't stick. But when it's real—when questions are welcomed, when formation runs deep—people stay.

We Turned Formation into a Funnel

Somewhere along the way, Sunday School became a conversion funnel instead of a formation process. We started treating kids as souls to be won rather than people to be formed. We told them that people who don't believe are outsiders. We created two categories: saved and lost, in and out, us and them.

And then we treated the children themselves as if they were already on one side of that line, as if their parents' faith automatically became their own.

But that's not how the early church worked.

The early church had catechists. Teachers who would walk with seekers for years before baptism. They didn't rush people to a decision. They engaged with questions. They let people sit in uncertainty. They trusted that formation takes time, and that faith built slowly on honest ground would outlast faith built quickly on shallow answers.

We replaced catechesis with curriculum. We replaced formation with information. We started teaching kids like they needed to be closed, like a sale, rather than accompanied, like a student.

And then we wonder why they leave when they finally have permission to ask questions.

Put the School Back in Sundays

What if Sunday School were actually school? Not entertainment. Not daycare. Not a holding room until the kids are old enough for "real" church. But a place where deep conversations happen, where real learning takes place, and where faith is explored with intellectual honesty and spiritual openness.

What if we taught kids like they were going to become teenagers who ask hard questions? What if we prepared teachers to engage with doubt instead of shutting it down?

That's what these volumes are for.

Deep Research Sunday School Lessons is a 24 volume curriculum built on a simple premise: the six year old in your class today will be a sixteen year old with hard questions tomorrow, and a twenty six year old making real decisions about faith the day after that. These lessons don't treat kids as conversions waiting to happen. They treat them as thinkers, as future adults, as people who deserve to be taken seriously now so they don't feel like strangers to the faith later.

Curriculum That Prepares Teachers to Engage

Every lesson in every volume includes tools that most curricula skip entirely. Because we believe the teacher's preparation matters as much as the student's experience.

Handling Hard Questions

Real theological questions kids actually ask, with honest frameworks for discussion. Not scripted answers. Frameworks for thinking.

Common Pitfalls to Avoid

Guidance on what not to say. How not to accidentally shut down curiosity or give glib answers that fall apart later.

Three Age Tracks

Grades 1 to 3. Grades 4 to 6. Grades 7 to 8 and Adult. The same Scripture, deepening over time. Kids can revisit passages as they mature and find new layers.

Theological Depth

Historical context. Cultural background. The Big Idea. Theological Core. These lessons are researched, not recycled.

Discussion, Not Lecture

Every lesson is built around facilitated discussion. Questions to ask. Probes to go deeper. Space for "I don't know."

Practical Application

Activities, challenges, and connection to real life. Faith that matters on Monday, not just Sunday.

A Note on Scripture Sources

These lessons draw primarily from the 66 books of the Protestant canon using the NIV translation. Occasionally, lessons reference the Deuterocanonical books, texts honored as Scripture by Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican, and Ethiopian Christian traditions. We include these sparingly but intentionally, because we believe Christians should be inclusive of other Christians. The body of Christ is large, and our differences should draw us closer together in mutual respect, not push us apart in division.

This Is a Gift to the Church

We built these volumes because we believe the next generation deserves better. Better than shallow. Better than scripted. Better than curriculum that treats doubt like a disease instead of a doorway. This isn't a lead magnet or a loss leader. It's a gift. Take it. Use it. Share it. Put the school back in Sundays.
